I deeply admire your work - its beauty, courage, and unflinching opposition to oppression, exploitation, and genocide. As an artist myself, I find your voice and vision truly inspiring. I share your rage at the onslaught of fascism and the brutality of ICE under Trump and his thugs, and I honor the way you give that rage form.
Your portrait of Alex Jeffrey Pretti is stunning. You captured his gentleness, his steadiness, and his resolve to defend his neighbors. It moved me.
I write only because I believe in the depth of your moral vision.
In depicting the ICE agent as an “animal” - with long ears and horns, echoing the traditional devil - you may not realize that the symbolism unintentionally harms the very movement you serve. The animals evoked - pig, horse, long-eared creature - are gentle, innocent beings. They are prey, not predators. To cast brutal human violence in animal form reinforces a hierarchy in which human life is implicitly elevated above nonhuman life.
That hierarchy - human supremacy - is the same root as white supremacy, male supremacy, and every system of domination. It affirms that some lives are more valuable than others. It quietly supports carnism: the ideology that normalizes violence against animals and underwrites the animal-agriculture system—the most destructive force on the planet, driving land theft, war, starvation, deforestation, pollution, and climate collapse.
Animal oppression is not a side issue. It is foundational. It is where domination began, and it is where it must end.
I offer this with respect and solidarity, believing that your art is capable of helping us see beyond every hierarchy of worth.
With gratitude for your work and your courage, Nancy 🌹
And now we’ll have to endure an onslaught of grotesque lies from a collection of two-bit fascists, who defile religious doctrine in service of a criminal oligarchy.
Being “on the right side” of a narrative doesn’t make you bulletproof.
